Summary of sessions

The Forum is a two-day event examining the impact of diabetes and exploring ways to create change on a regional level. It is our hope that national-specific action plans will be adopted with clear steps on how to prioritise diabetes on national agendas, dedicate resources, train healthcare professionals, raise awareness, just to name a few.

The Forum is co-hosted by the UAE Ministry of Health, the executive board for the Health Ministers' Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the World Bank Group MENA region and the World Diabetes Foundation, with the support of the International Diabetes Federation, the Emirates Diabetes Society, the Gulf Group for the Study of Diabetes and the MENA Health Policy Forum. The event is co-organised and sponsored by Novo Nordisk.

The MENA Diabetes Leadership Forum in Dubai will bring together key stakeholders and leaders who have already been influential in changing diabetes in the MENA region.
The Forum will discuss, among other issues:

  • Economic burden of diabetes
  • Prevention through lifestyle intervention
  • Early detection and better treatment
  • Quality of diabetes care and quality of life of people with diabetes

Keynote speakers will include, among many others:

  • President Bill Clinton, Founder of The William J. Clinton Foundation and 42nd President of the United States of America
  • His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark
  • His Excellency Dr Hanif Hassan Ali, Minister of Health, UAE

  • Professor Jean Claude Mbanya, president, International Diabetes Federation
  • Professor Pierre Lefebvre, chairman, World Diabetes Foundation
  • Abdul Rahman Salem Alkuwari, president, Gulf Group for the Study of Diabetes
