The MENA Diabetes Leadership Forum examines the impact of diabetes and explores ways to create change on a regional level. It is our hope that national-specific action plans will be adopted with clear steps on how to prioritise diabetes on national agendas, dedicate resources, train healthcare professionals, raise awareness, just to name a few. The Forum is hosted by the UAE Ministry of Health, co-hosted by the executive board for the Health Ministers' Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council States, the World Bank Group (MENA region) and the World Diabetes Foundation, with the support of the Dubai Health Authority, the Health Authority-Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, the International Diabetes Federation, the Emirates Diabetes Society, the Gulf Group for the Study of Diabetes, the MENA Health Policy Forum, Imperial College London, the Joslin Diabetes Center and the Steno Diabetes Center. The event is organised and sponsored by Novo Nordisk.
The MENA region is facing one of the greatest healthcare challenges of our time: the diabetes pandemic, which is a consequence of rapid economic development, changing diet and sedentary lifestyles. Diabetes is sweeping the region affecting an estimated 26.6 million people today, imposing overwhelming demands on the region's healthcare institutions and excessive financial
burdens on its governments. As alarming as this picture is, the number of people with diabetes is expected to double to 51.7 million people by 2030. The toll this will take on the MENA region will be enormous in both human and financial terms.
